Today I decided to write in dept about On Page SEO Techniques that a webmaster must follow. Because I consider On Page as a main factor when you are thinking about or doing SEO for your online business sites.
I will not waste much of your time but do let me ask a question to you. Do you really believe rather than building backlinks, doing massive spam here and there will bring success to you in long term? Ofcourse my answer is no.
Therefore, In this post I am actually focusing on building a very clear picture by which you will not only be able to understand what on page factors you should follow but also it will help and encourage you to go for the right things rather than doing spamming. Because if the structure of a building is solid, no one can destroy it easily. Same way, if your SEO for your entire blog or site is perfect, you are going to have a long term ranking and it will not be easy for your competitors to outrank you.
One more question a few of my friends ask me, why to follow On Page Optimization as they think its useless to do or is no more worthy because Google or other search engines have their set of algorithm to rank any site for particular keywords? But its wrong. I do believe off-page ofcourse matters a lot. Like having strong and relevant backlinks pointing your site, having high Page Rank (PR) or Domain Authority (DA), Social media coverage (number of shares, like and comments) or videos etc. But what my point is, if you are going to have a strong readership and relation with your visitors, structure of your On Page Should be in well manner. It basically increases trust to your visitor when they got what they wanted and here Off-page happens automatically. Because if I like something, definitely I will share it across all platforms I use.
OK! Lets start. Here is the list of 15 Tips I follow and recommend everybody to do. So, here you go.
#1: Keyword Research and its Optimization:
Most of people will say this does not include in technique but I say it is the main factor involved for better optimization. Isn’t it better to use those golden words that actually are searched by thousands of people everyday, every month and every year? Now the question is, how we can find keywords for our content? Amazingly Google has a best tool called Google Keyword Planner under Adwords account where you can check how much a specific term is searched in Google. You can check its Global number of average searches per month, Country Wise and even city wise.
Just go to Google Keyword Planner, enter your search term you want to check and here is a screen shot as how you will find a result containing your keywords as well as its relevant words as well.
Now lets suppose you are targeting above keyword in your content, how will you optimize it?
Tips to Optimize Your Keywords in Content:
- Use in Title.
- Use in first paragraph.
- Use in Image alt tag.
- Use in last paragraph.
- Use in Heading such as H2 or H3
However there are some more factors you should consider while optimizing. A complete set of best WordPress SEO Plugins list I have shared that really help you to optimize content.
#2: Great Content:
Sounds crazy or good? But you can not really take another step unless you have great contents for your site. Remember, the beauty remains beautiful when it is equal from inside and outside. I mean to say here, when you really think of your readers what actually they want, you are definitely going to win. Because every search engine’s algorithm is to deliver the best possible result. So, when you have something great, you get best results.
Tips for Better Content:
- Always consider readers requirement while writing.
- Deliver the best and complete information for a particular topic you are writing about.
- Don’t forget to have a glance on points of top competitors as what they have delivered.
- By following above point, you find what they have missed and here you get what actually readers want.
- Ask a question to friends or like wise people of niche to have better ideas what they are interested in to know about your topic. Simply ask them how they describe (your topic) and through their replies, you get amazing piece of ideas.
- Use simple and easy to understand language.
- Cover topic in different points with good examples.
- Use images in content to show main points.
#3: Use in Meta Description:
SE displays a piece of extracted information from a page in their search result. When you use keyword in description and people search for it, search engines usually make that word as bold, increasing the chances of being notice by the person searching for it and the chances goes higher that he or she will click on yours from the result.
For example: I search “install wordpress” and I get result as below.
From the above image there are three results but the one I picked had my exact match of what I was looking for. The title had my desired keyword as well as in meta description the one you see right below green colored URL.
So, using in meta description will definitely be more appealing to user to click.
#4: Keyword Density:
It is the percentage of times of a word or a phrase used on a page compared with the total number of words used in content. I read in many articles and found that everybody says to keep your density percentage below than 2%. However I consider and I have tested my self too that having percentage below than 1% would be most effective in getting your content ranked without any backlink or anything else such as off page seo. Why this? Because when we repeat our main targeted keyword again and again in content, it is called spam which is considered wrong and sometimes you get penalized just because of it. Also don’t do keyword stuffing which means using so many related words with your keyword.
Another reason to make it below than 1% is because we use it in H1 tag and then it is also available in breadcrumbs and sometimes it is the category name in sidebar. So all these things increase that word density and page becomes spam.
#5: Use LSI in Content:
LSI means Latent Semantic Indexing. Simply it means to use a related words according to topic. The more related and synonyms you use, the more significant and to the point your article would be. Why we need to do it? Because the more relevant your topic would be, the more priority will be given to your content.
For example: You are writing a topic about Cars, search engine would expect words in your content such as “automobile, Bentley, engine, toyota ,etc”
Now lets talk about some HTML Tags which need consideration here.
#6: Use of HTML Tags:
OK! There are some tags that we need to use in our script body. Like Heading Tags from H1 to H6, Bold Tags like <b> or <strong>, italic tags like <i> or <em> and underline tag like <u> or (with the use of css).
Let me describe you each one by one.
- For Titles: Use H1 for your title of your content (only once) and then H2 to H6 through out article when need. This helps to identify about the article.
- For Bold: There are two tags to bold any word in your content. First is <strong> and second is <b>. So, why there are two? Why we need to use <strong> somewhere and <b> somewhere else? The key difference between these two tags is simple, suppose we have two words. “A” and “B”. Now if I want Search engines to give more priority to “A”, I will use <strong> and if I want to give “B” less priority over to “A”, I will use <b> for “B”. I hope its cleared to you.
- For Italic: Same as above, <em> and <i> works same but when I want to give more priority to “A”, I will use <em> for “A” and <i> for “B” if I want to give it less priority and vise versa.
#7: Use Image and Optimize It:
Images are very much important for optimization. It makes your content more beautiful as images creates an attraction to readers as well as images bring lots of visitors to your site from image engines such as Google. Lots of text are ignored but images are always considered and viewed. So, the technique is to use relevant images and optimize it for SEO.
Now, how you can optimize it? Simply by using targeted phrase or keyword in alt tag of HTML. Like in below example.
<img src=”image.jpg” atl=”Use Keyword Here” title=”Title” />
Remember: Don’t use irrelevant keywords. Like your image has a lion, and you are using “tiger” as alt tag so it does not make any sense.
It means to create hyperlinks pointing to your own pages or post that you previously made with targeted keywords. That means, you should link to other posts while writing another article.
For example: I wrote about 5 Best Companies of Web Hosting for Blogs previously. Now if you consider, it is hyperlink and when you click on it, you will go to that topic. So, by this way you create hyperlinks.
Tips for Internal Linking:
- Use Dofollow for links.
- Target keywords in Anchor Text.
- Always point relevant Posts.
Note: Avoid creating so many internal links if not necessary.
Note: Make it dofollow as you are giving priority to your internal pages.
#9: External Link (Nofollow):
External links are those which point to other site. It is very effective technique as through this, you give value to some other relevant and good authority site which is considered as a tag to your topic. The key factor is to provide more and more related information to readers. Normally we don’t have post for that topic, so pointing them is a good idea and helps to grow community and trust factor as well. Because the webmaster whose site you are pointing, will contact you or link you back somewhere so in this way you get quality backlinks.
Tips for External Linking:
- Always Point High Authority Sites.
- Avoid linking too many sites in one article.
- 2 is max and 1 is enough link to point.
- Create relevant anchor text if necessary or use name of site.
- Never link to any spam or less authority site.
Note: Only link to authority sites. Most of people say to give value to any site. But I consider linking to only authoritative site because when you link others, you are actually passing page rank and authority and if the site you are pointing, is not trusted and you may get penalized.
#10: Permalinks Structure:
Permalinks play a vital role in ranking and optimization. Consider having a short and friendly URL that can be easily read by your visitors. Doing so, effectively boasts ranking.
Tips to Optimize Permalinks:
- Use %postname% structure for permalinks in wordress.
- Create SEO and User Friendly URL (Slugs).
- Use Keyword in URL
Note: Avoid using long URLs and stop words. Such “as, you, on, a, of, me, that, if, etc“
#11: Create Effective Robots.txt File:
Robots.TXT file plays an amazing role in crawling. This is a file in which you can handle what pages or directory should be crawled and what should not be. Harsh Agrawal defined in well manner and I created my Robots.TXT file by reading out his article here.
Read his article and create an effective file.
#12: Submit XML Sitemap:
It is a document that helps Google, Bing and Yahoo to better understand about your website and its pages. XML sitemap is created to let notify search engines about new links to be crawled for indexing. Read more.
Note: Create sitemap using WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast and submit it.
#13: HTML Sitemap:
Though there is no use of creating it for the means of optimization but its very effective for users. Isn’t it there should be a particular place where you classify most important articles, arranging them in categories for ease of your readers? Sounds amazing.
Useful Tip: Create a Resource Page. Make it attractive and list all articles in categories so a user can easily navigate.
#14: Website Speed:
It is one of the most important factor if neglected, will be very harmful for SEO as well as building trust and readership. The most annoying situation for me is to see a web page keeps loading and opens slow. Thus, I simply close that one and find another one. So, optimizing web speed is very necessary. Also all search engines gives much priority to the site having high speed and it has also become a part of SEO.
Tips for Better Speed:
- Use WordPress.
- Use Wp Fastest Cache Plugin.
- Reduce Image size using Wp Smush It Plugin.
- Use CDN Service for your blog.
- Host blog on Fastest Server.
#15: Social Media Integration:
One would be thinking why I am talking about Social Media here and how can it be the factor for optimizing a site. Well, you can not leave without having agreed with me that Social Media has become now a part of SEO. The more content is shared across all social platforms, the more authority you gain and most of the sites are being ranked just because of social signals now days. So, ignoring would be a great loss.
Tips to Optimize with Social Media:
- Use Social Share Plugins.
- Allow user to like and share content.
- Hide some part of content with Social Locker Plugin. In this way, a user will have to like or share the content to read hidden items. Thus, you gain social signals. But make sure your visitors are not annoying by this way.
